Hi, I am Mrs. Butler. This has been a wonderful and exciting year in Room 318. I had the opportunity to teach 8th grade for the first half of the year and now 7th grade from January to June.
The 8th grade students read a classic science fiction novel "A Wrinkle In Time" by Madeline L'Engle. Students learned a little about the 1960's which was the timeframe of the story. We studied the characters, setting and plot. We looked at literay techniques the author used to help convey the story. They increased their knowledge of vocabulary by learning 125 new words. They wrote journal entries and chapter summaries. They responded to comprehension questions using the text to support their responses. At the conclusion of the novel, students were given time to watch the movie based on the book and almost everyone came to the conclusion that "the book was better".
Most 7th grade students are now reading "Wonder" by R. J. Palacio. One class is reading the Newberry Award winn ing novel "The Graveyard Book" by Neil Gaiman. The 7th graders are also focusing on elements of a story and plot, as well as vocabulary and writing clear and consise responses to questioins about the text. They love the days when they can "just read".
