Geoff Thomas takes over as head coach for Jeff Evans

By Dennis Weller

Geoff Thomas played baseball under a coach who had nine players taken in the Major League Draft, including a Hall of Famer, and he coached under a PIAA champion and a 300-game winner.

During that time, he has gained a wealth of knowledge and experience that he is now giving back to young players and the community as the new head coach at Pottstown.

Thomas takes over for Jeff Evans, who coached the Trojans the last six seasons before leaving to take an assistant coach position at Lehigh Carbon Community College.

"My main reason for being a coach is to give back, to build young minds and to build relationships," said Thomas, who is a language arts and social studies teacher at Pottstown Middle School. "Teaching them to play the game the right way. Teaching them through repetition."

He brings a lot of energy to the program," said Steve Anspach, the school's director of co-curricular activities. "He's done a phenomenal job already, working with the youth program and community. We're excited to have him as our head coach. The kids are working hard every day."

Thomas played from 1994-96 at Phoenixville under John "Doc" Kennedy - who also coached Hall of Fame catcher Mike Piazza and had the high school field dedicated to him - and went on to play at Eastern University.

He was the pitching coach for 10 years at Phoenixville under Jack Sturgeon, who guided the Phantoms to a PIAA Class 2A title in 2001 and also helped out with the Carpenter Cup team during that time.

At Pottstown, Thomas was the JV coach for one year and the pitching coach the last three under Evans, who won more than 300 games in 25 years at Oley Valley, Wilson and Pottstown.

"Doc Kennedy is a tremendous mentor of mine," said Thomas. "I most certainly did learn quite a bit from Jeff Evans and Jack Sturgeon. I wouldn't be where I am without them."

Thomas will be assisted by Todd Endy and Chris Petro. Endy has been an assistant with the Trojans and manager of the Pottstown Steelers American Legion team the past 13 years.

"I'm thrilled to have him on the staff," Thomas said of Endy.

Three former local players will serve as volunteer assistants: Nick Zipay (Pottstown, Penn State Berks), Mike Breidenbach (St. Pius X) and Rich Masciarelli (Pottstown, Elizabethtown).

The Trojans went 3-13 in the Pioneer Athletic Conference and 3-15 overall last year.

This year's team will include returning seniors Tommy Dobbs (1B/OF), Owen Morton (P/C/3B), Jimmy O'Donnell (C/OF) and Seth Yergey (P/1B), along with juniors Jeremy Adams (2B/SS/3B) and Daulton Mullin (SS) and sophomores Jacob Eagle (1B/OF, All-PAC second-team infielder) and Brandon Gebhard (2B/3B).

"I'm really looking forward to the season," Thomas said. "I've got a pretty young team and some solid pitchers as well."

Good afternoon, this is to inform parents and guardians that today Friday, March 23, our staff noticed certain food spoilage contained in a few lunches for elementary students. After consulting with our food service director, we made the immediate decision to discard all prepared menu items for today and served an alternate lunch.  High School and Middle school students were not affected and have a different lunch menu.  All students were fed and are safe.  Thank you.

This is to inform parents and guardians in the district of safety upgrades we are making to the middle school effective today.  Over the past several weeks, we have been exploring different solutions to ongoing concerns. As a result, we have partnered with Creative Health Services to provide Behavioral and Mental Health support to our middle school students 5 days per week until further notice.  We have also contracted with Advanced Protection Company to assign a safety and security agent to help protect our students both inside and outside of the school building, 5 days per week until further notice. We will continue to monitor and adjust our safety and security procedures at all schools and if you should become aware of a threat to our students or staff, please call our safety line immediately at 610-970-6705.  Thank you.
