Thank you to PHS student Alianna Samuel, DECA Director of Marketing and Communications for her report and photos from the Annual State Career Development Conference. Read all about our students and you will know another reason to say, proud to be from Pottstown.
Under the Direction of Economics Teacher Kevin Pascal and Marketing Teacher Ronald Davenport, marketing students who are members of DECA (An Association of Marketing Students) at Pottstown High School participated in the Annual State Career Development Conference at the Hershey Lodge, February 22nd - 24th 2022.
DECA is the only Career and Technical Student Organization operating through the nation's schools to attract young people to careers in marketing management, and entrepreneurship. Its purposes are to develop respect for education which will contribute to occupational competence and to promote understanding and appreciation for the responsibilities of citizenship in our free enterprise system.
While at DECA competitions our students took a test to assess their knowledge on their business categories, participated in role-plays such as meeting with a supervisor and having to give a solution to a problem, and took advantage of the many workshops available at DECA competitions. These workshops offered tips on dressing for success and included motivational speakers.
State Conference participants were:
Elizabeth Adedeji, Jevohn Jones & Izaiyah Wilkerson | Start Up Business Plan |
Adam Alaoui | Personal Financial Literacy (Fifth Place, Highest Roleplay and Test Score) |
Layla Bearden | Apparel and Accessories Marketing |
Tyler Broughton | Hotel and Lodging Management |

Pottstown DECA members were amongst over 2000 students at the three-day State Conference. There are over 80 DECA chapters in Pennsylvania with a membership of more than 3200 students, alumni, teachers, and business professionals.
Although this year only one of our students placed at the competitions, they still made great achievements by making Tier 1 status for their Plan of Action. This required the members to conduct at least one community service event and complete two goals in each of the following categories: Member/Chapter activities, Promotion, Community Service, and Charity.
We must also make sure to give a round of applause to Adam Alaoui for receiving one of the highest roleplay scores in his category.
Nonetheless, it was a great competition and our DECA members have gained valuable experiences and skills that they look forward to implementing for not only next year’s competition, but life.
