Middle School Student Hopes To Inspire Others

Pottstown Middle School fifth grade student Ashirah Still has been working with district speech therapist Theresa Spitko for three years to manage her issues with stuttering.

She wrote a letter of encouragement that was published by The Stuttering Foundation of America in their nationally distributed magazine. She hopes that by telling her story she will help others improve their communication skills.

Spitko said, I have been working with Ashirah Still since she came to our district as a second grader at Franklin Elementary. One of the things I like to do in therapy with students who stutter is read letters from other children who stutter to give them a sense of belonging and to explore strategies for improving their own communication skills.

Ashirah wrote a letter to the publisher during one of our therapy sessions about her own experience with stuttering. Her letter provides nothing but hope and encouragement to other children.
