Hello Pottstown High School Families:

I am very excited to embark on a new year with you and your children at the high school. Our fall sports teams are hard at work on the practice fields, the band is practicing in the mornings and the evenings, and the annual AFJROTC summer leadership camps are in full swing. If you ever want to feel good about all that Pottstown High School has to offer, please drive down Franklin Street in the morning—slowly so you don’t miss anything—and check out our students hard at work two weeks before the doors open for classes!

We have an exciting new feature this year that I hope you will utilize. You can now receive attendance alerts whenever your child is absent from school or when his/her grades fall to the level of failing. To get alerts please sign up on the Home Access Center at the top of the screen on the right.

The Home Access Center will be open for students and parents on August 14, 2017. Please take a moment to review your student’s schedule. If there are any core courses or CTE program courses missing or any holes (seniors are afforded one open block per semester and MCCC courses count for one block per semester each) in the schedule, please contact the counseling office to make an appointment to have your schedule reviewed for possible changes. The counseling office number is 610-970-6715. Please be patient as this is the busiest time of year for the counseling office. Also, please note that Ms. Scholwinski-Conlan is on leave this year and Ms. Ashley Baker will be available for all freshmen and junior student concerns. Mr. Pagano continues to be the counselor for the Classes of 2018 and 2020.

Below are outlined some of the changes this year. Your student will be given the student/parent handbook on the first day of school. Please become familiar with the policies of the district and rules of the high school to avoid any confusion in the future.

Cell Phone/Electronic Device Policy: Personal electronic devices and associated equipment, such as cell phones and earbuds, cause a serious distraction to learning and as such are not permitted during class time. Examples of electronic devices include, but may not be limited to: cell phones, headphones, earbuds, iPods, iPads, gaming devices, Bluetooth speakers, etc. Once a student enters a classroom all devices (including headphones and earbuds) must be put away and out of sight. Cell phones may be used in the cafeteria during a student’s assigned lunch, at the change of classes between bells, and before or after school. Should you need to contact your student, please call the high school office and the message will be relayed. Please refer to the parent/student handbook for a complete outline of consequences for violation of this policy or refusal to turn a phone over when requested.

Truancy: Pennsylvania truancy laws have changed. The State of Pennsylvania defines truancy as a student who has missed 3 days of unexcused absence from school and “habitual truancy” as a student who has 6 or more days of unexcused absence from school in a school year. Once a student has reached 6 total absences for the school year a meeting must be held with the school, parents/guardians, and student to develop a plan to eliminate the issues causing truancy. If the student reaches 8 unexcused absences a citation to appear in the District Magistrate’s office is required. Continued truancy will result in the Office of Children and Youth being notified.

August 28th is the first day of school and we are very excited to see all of the high school students back for another year of learning and fun! The doors open at 7:48 a.m. and homework begins at 7:56 a.m. Students must be in homeroom to avoid being marked late to school. Some other dates to look forward to at the beginning of the year include:

August 26th 10:00 a.m. New Student and Freshmen Open House

August 31st 6:00 p.m. Back to School Night

September 8th 7:00 p.m. Friday Night Football Under the Lights!

Sincerely,

Danielle McCoy
Principal

If you are unable to attend graduation, we will be going live on our Facebook page for the duration of the event. You will be able to view at http://www.facebook.com/PottstownSchoolDistrict. Don't forget to like the page too!

Additionally, we will have a custom geofilter on Snapchat that says "PHS class of 2017." Students and families, share your celebratory selfies with this fun filter. Feel free to screenshot them and post on Twitter and/or Instagram using #PSDGrad17.

Congratulations graduates!
