Response to Intervention for Speech/Language

Students who do not currently receive speech/language support services may be referred to the speech/language therapist due to concerns a teacher may see within the classroom.  Depending on the specific needs of the student, he/she may qualify to participate in the Pottstown School District’s Response to Intervention Program (RTI).  The steps to qualify for this program are as follows:

  • Student is referred to speech/language therapist

  • Speech/Language therapist screens student

  • Student may qualify for RTI services due to deficits with the following skills:

  1. Difficulty producing speech sounds

  2. Difficulty with word knowledge/vocabulary

  3. Difficulty with grammar skills

  4. Difficulty with social communication skills

If the student qualifies for services, the speech/language therapist will send home a letter reviewing the results of the student’s screening as well as a parental permission form to participate in the program.

*** This is not a special education program, but is designed to provide therapy appropriate to a student’s mild needs at the time.
