Course Description

Marketing Program

Students interested in Marketing, Management, Finance, Hospitality, or Entrepreneurship  as a possible career choice should enroll in the marketing program at Pottstown High School. Any student interested in owning their own business one day should consider this program as it provides valuable insight and hands on experience of operating a  real business. The program includes extensive leadership and presentation experience through participating in DECA, a national marketing education organization for high school students. Students enrolled in the marketing program are automatically enrolled in the DECA organization.


Sports and Entertainment Marketing  (Year 1) - 8201

10-11, Credit - 1

This course is designed to introduce students to the field of marketing. Topics include consumer motivation, selling and buying functions, personal selling, advertising, inventory control, management, distribution, and government regulations in the role of marketing. Students will practice a competitive event area for DECA with mock role plays.

Students enrolled in this course are enrolled in  DECA, a national marketing education organization for high school students.

 – Students can earn money for DECA events by working in the school store before and after school.

                                                                                                                                              

MARKETING AND STORE OPERATIONS (Year 2) - 8202

11-12, Credit - 2

This course allows students to apply skills “hands on” within a school based business.   Students will rotate through a series of job/skills associated with operating  the school store. They will learn all aspects of business operations. Job categories include marketing and promotion, accounting, product development, store management, inventory control, and vendor relations.  Students may compete in the School Based Enterprise certification event for DECA. Students will also participate in Virtual Business, a computer based business simulation.  Students enrolled in this course are enrolled in DECA, a national marketing education organization for high school students. ------------Students can earn money  for DECA events by working in the school store before and after school.

Marketing Co-Op/Internship /Advertising – (Year 3 ) - 8206                   

12, Credit – 2

Students will utilize the marketing and advertising skills they learned in previous courses to develop a marketing portfolio.  Students will design and produce marketing materials that are needed for clubs and sports  at the high school. They will also produce material for local businesses in the Pottstown community. Students will  learn basic  functions of  Adobe In-Design program  for Print advertising layout.  Students can also choose a specific area of marketing where they can perform a Cooperative Education Cap-Stone internship where they are able learn on the job during school hours at an approved local business.
